The Institute for Theoretical and Mathematical Physics is highly involved in implementing two master's programs. The "Quantum Gravity and Mathematical Physics" program has been running since 2019 in collaboration with the Faculty of Physics, and the international English-taught program "Geometry and Quantum Fields" has been offered since 2022 in partnership with the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics. Both programs are supported by the Theoretical Physics and Mathematics Advancement Foundation “BASIS”.
This year, five students successfully completed the “Quantum Gravity and Mathematical Physics“ program. Two graduates of the program have been accepted into the Russian doctorate programme after winning a part-time PhD fellowship competition at ITMP. Vadim Smirnov, a graduate, intends to continue his studies on the applications of Hopf algebras in mathematical physics at the MSU Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics.
Rostislav Potapov, a former student, shared his positive experiences with the program:
I joined the program after attending the ITMP Winter School 2022. I recall my time at ITMP for the freedom it provided, the chance to interact with experts from various fields of theoretical and mathematical physics, and the excellent work of the institute's administration. Once I finish the program, I intend to further my studies at the PhD programme of the Steklov Mathematical Institute combining with my work at ITMP”.
The international master's program "Geometry and Quantum Fields" saw seven graduates, with six hailing from foreign countries such as China, India, Colombia, and Mexico. Notably, this is the first and the only master's program in fundamental mathematics taught in English at Moscow University.
Two honor graduates from the program were invited to meet the Rector of Moscow State University, Academician V.A. Sadovnichy, along with other excellent foreign graduates.
During the meeting, Hernandez Rodriguez Abner gave a speech in Russian expressing gratitude for the academic experiences and opportunities provided at Moscow State University:
At MSU, I conducted several studies on advanced and modern topics in mathematical physics and learned a lot from its professors. In addition, I met good people here and found true friends. During these two years, I visited fantastic places such as the Caucasus, the Arctic, and the Russian Far East. All of this has become part of the wonderful memories of the time spent here. I am very grateful to Moscow State University and its rector, Victor Sadovnichy, and the BASIS Foundation founded by Oleg Deripaska for all the opportunities provided to me during my studies.”
Another graduate of the program, Yang Zonghao, won the ITMP competition for full-time postgraduate students and will continue to work on his research as a part of the Institute's research team.
MSU Rector V.A. Sadovnichy noted at the meeting that ITMP conducts research in modern theoretical and mathematical physics at the most advanced and highest level, in close collaboration with foreign researchers, and students receive fundamental knowledge. "I am very proud that this small Institute of Mathematical Physics works, and this marks its first graduation," the Rector added in his speech.
The ceremony celebrating the successful completion of both master's programs took place on June 5 at ITMP, where students were congratulated by faculty and staff, and presented with memorabilia. As part of the event, PhD in Philosophy V.A. Shaposhnikov gave an open lecture in English "The Unreasonable Effectiveness of Mathematics Reconsidered".
We extend best wishes to all graduates for a successful career in science and life, hoping that their hard work will be recognized and rewarded.
