Title: The Price of Abandoning Dark Matter Is Nonlocality
Abstract: This talk is based on arXiv:2402.11716 with Cedric Deffayet. We construct a nonlocal, modified gravity model which reproduces all the cosmological successes of cold dark matter, including the CMB, BAO and linearized structure formation. Our technique is to take the dark matter people at their word, that dark matter consists of a pressureless perfect fluid which only interacts with gravity. This means that its stress tensor is separately conserved, which provides enough equations to completely determine the pressure and a scalar whose gradient produces a timelike 4-velocity field. We discuss the prospects for modifying the model so that, for static, gravitationally bound systems it reduces to Milgrom's MOdified Newtonian Dynamics. We also discuss the prospects for deriving this model from a nonperturbative resummation of graviton loop effects during inflation.
