In Memoriam: Dmitry Levkov

On July 19, 2026, Dr. Dmitry Levkov passed away suddenly at the age of 46. He was an outstanding theoretical physicist, Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for Nuclear Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences (INR RAS), and Deputy Director of the Institute forTheoretical and Mathematical Physics MSU (ITMP MSU).

The scientific community has lost a brilliant researcher, a devoted professional, an exceptional teacher, and a remarkably kind and compassionate person.

 

Dmitry Gennadievich was a scientist of extraordinary talent whose work made significant contributions to modern high-energy physics, cosmology, and quantum field theory. His research on light dark matter, the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates, and the evolution of boson stars earned widespread recognition both in Russia and internationally. He possessed a rare scientific intuition, an exceptional ability to grasp the essence of the most complex physical phenomena, and a gift for developing original theoretical insights. His passing is an immense and irreparable loss for both the Institute for Nuclear Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences and ITMP.

 

For hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students at the Faculty of Physics of Lomonosov Moscow State University, Dmitry Gennadievich was far more than a lecturer - he was a true mentor in the fullest sense of the word. He inspired generations of young physicists with his passion for science and had a remarkable ability to explain the most challenging concepts of theoretical physics with clarity, enthusiasm, and genuine dedication. As Deputy Director of ITMP, he devoted tremendous effort to fostering an exceptional academic environment, nurturing young talent, and supporting early-career researchers.

 

Colleagues, friends, and students knew and will always remember Dmitry Gennadievich as a person of exceptional integrity, humility, and generosity of spirit. He was always ready to offer help, encouragement, or thoughtful advice. His optimism and genuine kindness touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

 

The staff of the Institute for Theoretical and Mathematical Physics extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. The memory of Dmitry Levkov will forever remain in the hearts of his colleagues, friends, and the many students whose lives and careers he profoundly influenced.
