My research interests lie in quantum field theory and gravity and also include nonperturbative effects in quantum mechanics, particularly instantons and quantum tunnelling. My current work focuses on nonlocal effective actions in gauge theories and gravity. I am interested in how the choice of quantum state, finite temperature and nonzero density affect quantum corrections and the dynamics of background fields. The main tool in my research is the heat kernel method, which I develop and apply to describe these effects beyond the local derivative expansion.
